Downtown is the heart of Huntington Beach.

Home to countless surf legends, Surf City USA first hit the map in 1914 when Hawaiian surfer George Freeth demonstrated surfing at the new concrete pier. In 1955, during an era of beach parties, Gidget, and Woodies, the city’s first surf shop, Gordie’s Surf Boards, opened under the pier. Nowadays, the iconic Huntington Beach Pier stands as one of the longest concrete municipal piers in the country.

Historic Main Street, charming Fifth Street, and newly minted Pacific City are choked with a mix of classic and modern sights, sounds, snacks, and suds.

Sit down for a mom-and-pop breakfast at Sugar Shack Cafe, a family-owned diner that’s been fueling surfers since 1967. Or cut into a Belgium waffle sandwich at Bruxie. Sample new food concepts at LOT 579, a modern food hall housing provocative bites like Popbar’s gelato popsicles and Burnt Crumbs’ Spaghetti Grilled Cheese. Duke’s serves the best Mai Tai in town, while American Dream pours 60 beers on tap.

Our rich surf culture sings from every direction, like at the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum—where it’s impossible to miss the World’s Largest Surfboard—along the Surfing Walk of Fame, around the pier, and on the walls of almost every local establishment.

Experience an art exhibit at the Huntington Beach Art Center, peruse locally made artwork and goods along Main Street and Pier Plaza, and sway to live local music under the sun and stars. Shop like a local at Huntington Surf & Sport, the longstanding family-run surf shop at the corner of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway.

Eminently walkable, bikeable, and surfable, the vibrant area caters to all visitors with rentals, lessons, and an unwavering love for waves.

Here, the surfer cool meets coastal chic lifestyle has been perfected, and we invite you to explore our sand and sidewalks.
