1. Which beaches are under the City of Huntington Beach and which ones are under CA Film Commission jurisdiction?

City of Huntington Beach permits City Beach, which includes the beach surrounding the pier, through Dog Beach (Beach Blvd. to Seapointe) and Sunset Beach. Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach are permitted through the CA Film Commission.

3. How long does it take to get a permit?

Due to COVID staffing restrictions, we require a minimum of 10 business days to turnaround a permit. Expedited permits are available, for an additional fee and only on a case-by-case basis. (Note: expedited permits are not guaranteed.) 

4. Are drones allowed in HB?

To fly a drone, the City of Huntington Beach requires proof of drone insurance, and the pilot must possess a valid FAA license, and comply with all FAA regulations (including not flying above 400' and only flying within visual sight of the operator).­­

5. I will be shooting in the water, do I need to hire a lifeguard?

Any activity (surf lessons, swimming, etc.) that takes place in the water requires a Marine Safety Officer at $94/hr with a two-hour minimum. These must be scheduled a minimum of two weeks in advance.

6. I’m shooting an engagement/family photo session, do I need a permit?

As long as you are using the photos for personal use only, you do not need a permit for engagement or family photography sessions.

7. What insurance do I need? Do I have to get insurance?
