Beach Accessibility

In Surf City USA®, the beach is more than a destination. It is a place to recharge, reconnect, and experience the healing rhythm of the waves. Ensuring that everyone can access that experience is a priority for Huntington Beach.

Through the dedicated efforts of the City of Huntington Beach, including Public Works, Marine Safety, and Beach Maintenance, along with community partners such as the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs and Warriors with Hope, meaningful strides have been made to expand access for individuals using wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and other mobility devices. From paved beach access walkways and Mobi-Mats across the sand, to beach wheelchair availability and accessible parking options, Huntington Beach continues working to remove barriers so more visitors can enjoy the coast with confidence.

“The ocean has such a powerful way to heal, to address our mental health and make us feel good. I think about all the individuals who will now be able to have the benefit of rolling down or walking with a cane to dip their toes into the water, to sit there and listen to the sound of the waves crashing.”
— Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley

Paved Accessible Beach Access & Walkways

Back to Top of List

The Bolsa Chica Multi-Use Trail is a flat, paved path stretching nearly 8.5 miles along the coastline, connecting Bolsa Chica, Huntington City, and Huntington State beaches. Wide concrete walkways branch off toward the sand, bonfire pits, and nearby amenities. There is accessible parking, restrooms, and shaded areas at select beach parking entrances. These smooth routes offer a more predictable surface for mobility devices and a calmer, easier approach to the shoreline.

Beach Mobi-Mats create a firm and stable pathway across the sand, extending from the paved bike path toward the shoreline. Made from recycled materials, they help prevent wheels from sinking, making shoreline access easier for wheelchair users, families with strollers, and guests using walkers.

Beach Wheelchairs

Beach wheelchairs are equipped with large, wide wheels designed to move more easily across sand. They are available free of charge at select beaches and typically require assistance from a companion.

Some locations accept advanced reservations, while others operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests are encouraged to contact beaches directly for availability and rental details.
