Sunset Beach

Locked in another era, Sunset Beach is the quintessential Southern California beach town.

Wild tales of Prohibition-era rum running rule its rich history, which can be explored through a fascinating walking tour. Annexed by Huntington Beach in 2011, the charming seaside community maintains its unique identity. Look for the iconic Water Tower that’s been hovering over Sunset Beach since the 1960s.

Surfers, kite surfers, and sailboarders shred this 1.5-mile stretch of ocean, one of the region’s widest beaches that also runs parallel to the “Green Belt,” a pastoral 14-acre park beloved by locals and their dogs. With plenty of action sports posts along Pacific Coast Highway, renting a surfboard, stand up paddle (SUP) board or kayak for the day or week is a breeze.

A stroll along the main drag introduces an eclectic variety of shops and spots to grab a bite. Cleobella’s boho boutique has been known to outfit the stars, while Antiques of the Sea houses Huntington Beach’s best collection of maritime antiques and novelties. Deep-rooted Katin Surf Shop and newly minted The Zone stock one-of-a-kind surf gear and apparel. Sip a cold brew at Mother’s Tavern or a tiki cocktail at Don The Beachcomber, an immersive Polynesian-inspired experience. Harbor House Cafe plates hearty dishes 24/7 with Hollywood memorabilia as its backdrop.
