2026 Surf City USA® Foodie Awards Best Sushi Winner: Sushi on Fire

There’s no better way to enjoy sushi than by the sea, with salty ocean breezes lingering in the air as a fresh cut of buttery fish melts in your mouth. You’ll find that in downtown Huntington Beach just a few blocks from the shore, where Sushi on Fire has lit up tastebuds since 2005. A Main Street mainstay, this family owned sushi hot spot has built a following thanks to its bold flavors and innovative combinations. In 2026, it was named the Best Sushi in 2026 Surf City USA® Foodie Awards — a well-deserved honor more than two decades in the making.

Huntington Beach Sushi On Fire

The Sushi Experience

If you’re wondering how Sushi on Fire won its crown, just look at the menu. With a staggering number of options, there’s something to suit every preference. Purists will love melt-in-your-mouth sashimi in fatty cuts including yellowtail and toro, or sushi like blue fin nigiri or maki (roll) with eel, salmon, shrimp, and other fish or vegetables.

There are also more modern takes, including the classic California roll and signature selections like the Michael “Jojo” — a combination of eel, spicy tuna, and avocado. Most of Sushi on Fire’s classic rolls can be served as a hand roll or cut. Soy paper can also be substituted for traditional nori for an additional charge.

But the specialty roll menu is where Sushi on Fire’s playful inventiveness really shines, and what makes this seaside spot worth a visit on your next visit to Huntington Beach. The 3 Companies is a favorite, featuring a generous roll stuffed with spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, and avocado and topped with fresh tuna and yellowtail. Ten soy-wrapped pieces are arranged on the rim of a shallow bowl, where a creamy sesame sauce for dipping offers a spicy kick.

Other standouts worth ordering include the Spicy White Dragon, a spicy tuna and shrimp tempura roll topped with seared yellowtail resting on spicy cilantro sauce, or the Snow White roll with tuna, yellowtail, and salmon wrapped inside a layer of rice and topped with yuzu juice-drizzled halibut.

Specials to Savor

Sushi may be an indulgence, but it doesn't always have to be a splurge. Sushi on Fire has great lunch specials on weekdays ‘til 4 p.m. where you can enjoy smaller portions of popular restaurant dishes. The chirashi bowl is a great way to try a sampling of fish with colorful sashimi arranged atop a bed of sushi rice, available for under $20 (there’s also a sashimi-only option for those who want to forgo the rice). The sushi combination lunch provides a taste of the menu with one piece of each of tuna, salmon, albacore, halibut, shrimp, and yellowtail, plus a tuna roll.

Lunchtime offerings also include cooked dishes like bento boxes. Classic Japanese fare like chicken, beef, or salmon teriyaki come portioned with a four-piece California roll, three pieces of gyoza, salad, and rice, as well as miso soup.

At dinnertime, there’s a selection of specialties from the sushi bar to peruse — these are as wildly creative in presentation as they are flavorful. While there’s the classic crispy rice topped with spicy tuna, don’t skip the more inventive offerings like the Jacob Special, which takes the same spicy tuna blend but serves it atop wonton chips with a drizzle of eel sauce and creamy mayo (great for sharing). The HB Sun is another longtime local favorite and it lives up to the hype with thin slices of four types of fish and avocado wrapped delicately around spicy tuna and crab salad.

The bar is limited to beer and wine — no cocktails here — but don’t sleep on the sake. Sushi on fire has it all, from hot and cold to premium and sparkling varieties that can be shared with the whole table.
