Let’s go surfin’ now! Everybody’s learnin’ how! We are the official Surf City USA, so a visit practically requires a surf sesh. Numerous surf schools offer private and group lessons—all equipment included—for novice surfers at three of our five beaches. Here’s your guide to hang ten.
Toes on the Nose
Only private, one-on-one, 1-hour lessons are offered and run $150 for 1 person, or $130 per person for 2 or more people. Students have the option of using their wetsuit and board for the day for no additional fee.
Summer hours are 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Winter hours are 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on weekends.
Clint Carroll Surf School
Led by a family with more than 60 years of surf experience, Clint Carroll Surf School is located in front of The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, and The Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa between lifeguard towers 15 & 19.
Lessons cover private one-on-one and semi-private options for all ages and levels.
Private 2-hour lessons run $110 for 1 person and $169 for 2 people. Group lessons cost $70 per person. Transportation is available upon request. Large groups and parties can be accommodated as well.
Hours are 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
HB Surf School
Licensed by the City of Huntington Beach, HB Surf School is taught by former pro and longtime coach Bill Sharp. The school is located in the community services building just south of the pier behind Duke’s Huntington Beach and Sandy’s Beach Shack at 285 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, CA 92648.
Lessons cover all levels and ages 8 and over, plus summer camps.
Lessons run for 90 minutes. Pricing is as follows: $145 for 1 person; $125 per person for 2 or more people, $110 per person for 3 people, and $95 per person for four or more people.
Adults (18+) can opt for the “Learn To Surf Saturdays” program, a series of four 90-minute surf lessons that runs $245.
For groms, the “Youth Beginner Saturday Morning Learn To Surf” program for ages 8-16 runs for four 1-hour lessons and costs $220. Next level sees the “Intermediate Youth Midweek Afternoon Surf Class,” which caters to ages 8-16, runs on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3:30-4:30 p.m., and costs $75. A 5-day surf camp for groms 8 and up meets Monday through Friday in July through August from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and costs $320.
Hours are 6 a.m.-4 p.m. daily.
Zack’s Surf School
Located just north of the pier, Zack’s Surf School offers lessons for all ages and levels, featuring 1-hour private, semi-private, and group instruction. Lessons also include all day surfing. All instructors are Red Cross Lifeguard Certified.
Private lessons run $125, semi-private lessons run $100 per person, and group lessons with a minimum of 2 people run $100 each.
Hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Banzai Surf School
NSSIA accredited and a partner of California State Parks and The Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, Banzai Surf School is located at Pacific Coast Highway & Brookhurst Street at 22355 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach, CA 92646.
Lessons are for all ages and levels, and cover private lessons, semi-private lessons, and camps.
Two-hour private surf lessons feature 20 minutes of safety and land instruction, followed by 90 minutes in the water. Prices are $159 for 1 person, $265 for 2 people, $349 for 3 people, $425 for 4 people, $499 for 5 people, and $575 for 6 people. Packages for 1 person include a 3-pack for $345 and a 6-pack for $630. Packages for 2 people include a 3-pack for $599.
Adult surf lessons for ages 14 and up offer an 11 a.m. daily “party” in the water where surfers can join a 90-minute group lesson for $79.
Groms ages 8 and up (to 88!) can join the weeklong summer camp for $390, taking place every week of summer, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Hours are generally 7 a.m.-noon, with afternoon availability depending on wind.
Corky Carroll’s Surf School
Huntington Beach’s first-ever surf school, Corky Carroll’s Surf School has been running for more than 20 years and is located at lifeguard tower 18.
Lessons are for all ages (4+) and levels and cover private, semi-private, and camps.
Private and semi-private lessons break down by season and weekday vs. weekend. Offseason lessons in the fall, winter, and spring (September 3-June 5) include 2 hours of instruction. Summer weekday lessons (June 6-August 28) go for 1 hour (equipment is yours until 2 p.m.), with an option to extend to 2 hours for an additional $40. Summer weekend lessons (June 6-August 29) go for 2 hours and start at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. on Saturdays and 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. on Sundays.
Pricing for summer weekends and non-summer 2-hour lessons are $130 for 1 person, $115 each for 2 people, $106 each for 3 people, $105 each for 4 people, $95 each for 5 people, and $90 each for 6 people. For 1-hour summer weekday lessons, prices run $90 for 1 person, $85 per person for 2-4 people, and $70 per person for 5-7 people.
Groms ages 8 and up and join Corky’s 5-day and 3-day surf camps, with 4-hour and 6-hour options. The 6-hour camps run from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and cost $380, while the 4-hour camps run from 8 a.m.-noon or 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. and cost $300. The 3-day camp costs $200.
Groms ages 4-8 can join Corky’s Junior Surf Camp, which also offers 3-day and 5-day options. Classes run for 4 hours from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Pricing is $300 for the 5-day camp, $200 for the 3-day camp, and $85 for a daily rate.
Summer beach hours are 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Fall, winter, and spring lessons are by appointment only.
Salty Grom Surf Camp
Salty Grom Surf Camp has been running since 2007 and is located near lifeguard tower 22, just north of the main entrance. All instructors are CPR-certified.
Private and group surf lessons are available for all ages (5+), along with 5-day summer camps.
Private 2-hour lessons are available for up to 4 surfers and are priced as follows: $120 for 1 person, $180 for 2 people, $270 for 3 people, and $350 for 4 people. Group 2-hour lessons are available for 5-10 surfers and are rated depending on instructor availability, time, and the number of participants—usually $45-$90 per person.
Groms ages 8-16, as well as “sprouts” ages 5-8, can join half- and full-day summer camps. Full-day camps run June through August, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.. and costs $435. Half-day camps for both ages 8-16 and 5-8 run June through August, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., and cost $310.
