Bolsa Chica

Bolsa Chica is one of Huntington Beach’s best showcases of the great outdoors, housing Bolsa Chica State Beach and the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Surfers and birders need head here for the finest in fins and feathers.

With more than 8,000 years of human history in Bolsa Chica, the area holds the memories of the first Californians, the Tongva. Throughout history it has preserved its natural habitats while embracing modern developments, like a Pacific Electric Railway “Red Car” stop, the Bolsa Chica Gun Club, and underground army bunkers during World War II. Nowadays, the pocket represents the culmination of a decades-long effort by activists who battled to protect the wetlands ecosystem from development.

Shallow water and smaller waves make Bolsa Chica State Beach a perfect spot for novice surfers, surf schools, and surf fisherman. Beach bonfires and RV campers are welcome here. And it boasts the best beach concessions in town.

Dotting the 3-mile stretch of beach are four gourmet concessionaires, including SeaLegs at the Beach—a beachside playground for kids and adults alike. Daydreaming about sipping champagne on a swing to the sounds of waves and live music? Here, this dream becomes a reality.

Directly across Pacific Coast Highway sprawls the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, the largest saltwater marsh along coastal California between the Monterey Bay and the Tijuana River Estuary. More than 300 bird species have been spotted within its 1,400 acres of wetlands and trails.
