Janice Aragon was born in Fresno, California, raised in Downey, and began surfing at age 16. She entered and won her first surfing contest in 1983 and won the Southern California-staged 1984 World Championships. Aragon had a second child in 1985, and the following year won the NSSA Nationals. Aragon was an NSSA competition judge in 1986, and the following year she became the first woman to judge a world pro tour event, working the Op Pro in Huntington. She was inducted into Huntington Beach Surfing Walk of Fame in 2001 and has been the NSSA's executive director since 1989.
