Leslie Gilson (a Huntington Beach resident) with the backing and support of the Huntington Beach Tree Society and the City of Huntington Beach, took on the restoration of the Norma Gibbs Monarch Butterfly overwintering site in 2007. The group removed 179 dead and dying Euclyptus trees and re-forested with a plan provided by Creekside Science. The first half of the project was the North bed which was planted with over 800 nectar and milkweed plants (the only food source for the Monarch). These were put in by over 200 volunteers on Arbor Day April 19, 2008. The first core of 65 trees was planted then. When finished, there will be over 1600 plants and close to 140 trees planted. The goal to lure the majestic Monarch back and restore this magnificent overwintering site has been realized as Sept. brought many caterpillars and Monarch butterflies.
Information about volunteer opportunities will be coming soon as they now have an information Kiosk to communicate with each other.
Eagle Scout Projects also take place in the park.
