"Cool" Summer Nights at Shipley Nature Center

By Shirley Dettloff

From all indications, this summer is going to be a hot one, and new ideas for cool Huntington Beach hideaways might seem hard to find.

To help you find out the Friends of Shipley Nature Center are happy to announce new evening hours at the nature center.

The center will be open from 4 pm to 8 pm on Thursday evenings throughout the summer, and the new hours will run from July through August.

This will be only the second time the Shipley Nature Center has been open in the evening, and the "Friends" are happy to be able to accommodate families who are unable to visit during the morning and early afternoon.

Visitors can expect to see a variety of animals that don't tend to venture out during the warmer times of day. Coyotes, rabbits, squirrels, lizards, snakes and a wide array of birds can been seen during the evening hours.

The water level in the center has receded, so all trails are now open to explorers of all ages, and the Interpretive Center will be open with a wide variety of exhibits to enjoy.

Shipley Nature Center is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in addition to the new evening hours on Thursdays. The Nature Center is located at 17829 Goldenwest Street within Huntington Beach's Central Park. There is a parking lot adjacent to the center off Goldenwest Street. There is no fee to visit the center!

For additional information visit the center's web site at www.shipleynature.org or contact the center by phone at 714-842-4772 or email at shipleynature@yahoo.com.
